Social Development Through Arts And Culture
Productions
Applauz Arts Initiative has a myriad of different productions that it has developed over the past ten years, stemming from workshops with participants as well as ideas born from the creative genius of the management team. Below are a few examples of the productions that we do as part of workshops and training courses, as well as for fundraisers or special events. Our productions can be tailored to the needs of the organisation that requests it - in both scale as well as cost.
Wa’ Was Djy! (first performed in 2004, recurring)
Focusing on the recording artists of the 60’s and 70’s in South Africa, "Wa’ Was Djy! The Musical" is an exciting new way to document the most vibrant era of music in South Africa. Wa’ Was Djy! pays tribute to prominent musicians such as:
-
Jonathan Butler
-
The Rockets
-
Zayne Adam
-
Sophia Foster
-
Leslie Kleinsmith
-
The Invaders
and many others who recorded against all odds in South Africa during the time of political instability. This is a research based project where the students research the era by interacting with their community. It becomes an entertaining encounter with South African history and culture.
Slavin: 2006
An “On the edge” original musical that focuses on the story of the ‘universal’ slave from Van Riebeeck to the mother trying to hold two jobs in order to provide for her family in today's society. The musical
questions whether we’ve really
severed the bonds of slavery. A
product of a workshop created in conjunction with a prominent
South African Director, Kurt
Egelhof. It was also the first time
the students, both vocalist and band recorded in a studio resulting in their first CD.
Colours Of My Life: 2006
A musical journey giving the
young cast an opportunity to
perform memorable songs from hit musicals such as Godspell, Barnum & Aint Misbehavin. All genres of music.
VIVA (Localicious, Boogielicious, Divalicious, Legendary): 2012
Four Tribute shows featuring Dizu Plaatjies, Crushanda Forbes, Brandon October, Jennifer Jones and Felicia Marion performing with a Core Team of 9 Applauz singers and musicians. Performed for eight evenings at the KKnK Festival in 2012.
For Generations (first performed in 2008, recurring)
For Generations is an energetic one person show that has been running since 2008, enjoying a national and international tour in formal and informal theatre venues. Kurt Egelhof uses the technique of autobiography to tell a universal story about the legacy we leave for our children’s children for generations to come. Who would think a WW2 veteran could produce a future Protea captain of color, and that they would experience the almost identical life path in two totally different worlds?
